Head Coach Nick Trani took over the softball program prior to the 1995 season, guiding the Gauchos to their first post-season berth in seven seasons. In 22 seasons of coaching women's intercollegiate softball, Trani has guided his teams to a post-season appearance 15 times, including five regional championships and five berths in the state finals. Saddleback captured Southern California regional championship titles following the 1996 and 1999 seasons when they were also state runners-up. The four-time conference coach-of-the-year, Trani has accumulated over 600 victories during his career and is the winningest softball coach in the history of both the Orange Coast and Saddleback college programs.

Saddleback College is proud of Coach Trani for his highly successful program, promoting excellence both on and off the field and in the classroom. For the past two years, Saddleback has been the No. 1 team in the state based on winning percentage and grade point average. Numerous Gauchos are now playing at 4-year universities, having earned scholarships from their success at Saddleback.
