Gauchos pull out brooms against Rustlers

The Saddleback softball team finished off Golden West College with a 9-1 win in six innings on Friday at Trani Field.   It was the third straight win for the Gauchos against the Rustlers this season.

Saddleback snapped a six game losing streak on Friday by beating Golden West at every facet of the game.  The Gauchos ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored four runs to win by the eight-run rule.

McKenna Walton scored the final run of the game, but it was her bat that provided a lot of the spark.  She finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run single in the sixth inning.  Walton also had an RBI single in the second inning to put Saddleback out front 5-0, knocking in Haleigh Wilkerson for a decisive lead.

Saddleback opened the game with four runs in the opening inning and never hit a ball out of the infield.  The Gauchos had six walks in the inning and a hit batter as Golden West pitching couldn't find the strike zone.  Rylee Argue, Bridget Thornton and Wilkerson all received free passes to start the game, loading the bases without ever taking the bat off their shoulders.  Later in the inning, Carlee Russo, Haley Rose and Kacie Tatman all had walks as the lead grew to 3-0.  Golden West then changed pitchers and the first batter was Hylah Prussak, who was hit by a pitch for a 4-0 lead.

Saddleback had eight hits and nine walks in the game while Russo kept things in tact on the mound.  Russo pitched a complete game seven-hitter, walking only one while improving to 2-5 on the season.

Saddleback will be back on the diamond on Saturday when they travel to Grossmont College to take on the Griffins.  The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM in El Cajon.
