The Saddleback softball team had a rare non-conference game on Monday when they hosted San Diego City College before a critical week of conference play. The Gauchos made quick work of the Knights, scoring early and often in a 12-1 win.
Saddleback wasted no time, scoring four times in the opening inning to set the tone. Amanda Padilla capped off the inning with a three-run homer to left field.
The Gauchos further distanced themselves in the second inning with three more runs, taking advantage of two errors by San Diego City. Padilla again finished off the scoring when she singled through the left side to score Haliegh Wilkerson as Saddleback took a 7-0 lead.
Padilla and the Gauchos weren't finished, scoring five more times in the third inning in blowing the game wide open. Reis Birkett blasted a three-run homer to center field as Saddleback took a 10-0 lead in the inning. Padilla then capped off the scoring with her second home run of the game with Wilkerson on base, giving the Gauchos a 12-0 lead.
Padilla finished 3-for-3 with six RBI in what was arguably the best game of her career. Birkett was 2-for-2 with four RBI while Wilkerson finished 3-for-3 with three runs-scored and two RBI.
Saddleback will continue the week with a pair of critical Orange Empire Conference games. The Gauchos will host Santa Ana on Wednesday at 3:00 PM before traveling to Golden West College on Friday for a 5:00 PM game.
