The opening day of the state tennis tournament has come and gone and Saddleback had as good of a day as they could have asked for. The Gauchos went 6-0 in singles and doubles play, with two individuals moving on the round of 32 along with three doubles teams.
Riku Goto had a busy day, opening the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Glendale's John Robertson. He then upset the No. 5-seed in the men's draw in beating De Anza'a Niklas Staniszewski, 6-2, 6-4.
Goto (pictured) then teamed with Jeffrey Gelman for a win in doubles against the team of David Dahzan and Yashneel Krishna from Cosumnes River College, 6-0, 6-0. The duo will now face the team of Kwang Lee and Marcos Silvestre from Cerritos College in the round of 32. Gelman was the other singles winner on the day, opening with a bye as the No. 15-seed before defeating Santa Barbara's Emerson Sekban, 6-0, 6-3.
Goto will face the No. 13-seed Aleks Trifunovic from Cerritos College on Friday in the round of 32 while Gelman will face the No. 2-seed Tam Duong from American River College.
Also winning on Thursday in doubles play were two other teams from Saddleback. Michael Park and Andrew Tran won a grueling three-set match against the No. 13-seed from Santa Rosa College, Shannon Connell and Trevor Pinder (3-6, 6-1, 10-4). Tyler Bloom and David Gustafson upset the No. 10-seed in the tournament in the team of Jansen Berand and John-Thomas Gaviano from De Anza College (6-2, 6-3). Park and Tran will face the No. 4-seed team of Christian Hess and Chris Pope from Glendale College in the round of 32 while Bloom and Gustafson will face the No. 7-seed team of Kyle Le and Peter Trhac from Palomar College.
