Men’s tennis opens playoffs at Ventura

The men's tennis team found out it made the playoffs on Sunday and will play at Ventura College in the opening round of the playoffs on Tuesday.   The Gauchos earned the No. 5 seed, with four Orange Empire Conference teams qualifying.

Saddleback (13-7) finished in third place in conference play but finished 8-2 out of conference, winning a number of key matches.  One of their two losses was to Ventura (16-4), the squad they will face on Tuesday.  The Gauchos fell 6-3 at Ventura five weeks ago in a match that was hotly contested, as Saddleback lost all three doubles matches by narrow margins.

"It was a close battle the first time and it will be great to see the guys get a second chance at Ventura," head coach Bud Davis said.  "It should be a good match between two solid teams."

Three other programs from the conference made the playoffs with Irvine Valley earning the top seed.  Cypress was tabbed the No. 3 seed and Orange Coast the No. 7 seed.

Saddleback and Ventura are set to battle at 2:00 PM at Ventura on Tuesday.  The winner of the match will likely play at Irvine Valley in the second round of the playoffs, provided the Lasers can beat San Diego City College on Tuesday.
