Gauchos slay Knights in critical non-conference battle

The Saddleback men's tennis team picked up a big win on Thursday with a 7-2 win over San Diego City College on the Saddleback Courts.  The Gauchos now wait for playoff announcements on Sunday.

Saddleback was one of those teams on the bubble entering Thursday's match but with a win over a program that won its conference could now find themselves qualifying for the playoffs, which start next Tuesday.  Saddleback won 4-of-6 singles matches and dominated doubles play on Thursday, showing off its depth and sending a strong message to tournament organizers that they clearly belong in the playoff picture.

After a loss at No. 1 singles, Jeffrey Gelman cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win to even the match.  The final three singles matches weren't even close as Tyler Bloom won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, Michael Park was dominant with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 and Kris Harris blasted his opponent 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.

Saddleback cruised in doubles play, winning 24-of-30 games en route to a comfortable win over a program that entered the day with only three losses all season.

Saddleback will find out its fate on Sunday when all the coaches convene at the Southern California Seed Meeting at Cerritos College to decide the eight qualifying teams.  The Gauchos finished the regular season at 13-7 overall and 5-5 in Orange Empire Conference play (3rd place).  The playoffs start on Tuesday.
