The Saddleback football team opens the season on September 2 at College of the Desert after finishing 9-2 in 2016. The Gauchos were ranked No. 16 in the country to start the season by JCGridiron.com.
Saddleback will open its 50th season of playing football in 2017. The Gauchos were ranked No. 11 to finish the 2016 season by JCGridiron.com and have finished in the Dirty 30 Rankings in all but one season since JCGridiron.com started ranking JUCO football programs in 2006. Saddleback's highest finish was No. 3 in the final rankings in 2006, and the Gauchos had a shot at the 2015 national title before falling to San Francisco in the state finals.
Saddleback has won or tied for the National Division Southern Conference title in three of the past five seasons. The Gauchos are 134-65 under coach Mark McElroy, who enters his 19th season.
Saddleback is joined by six other programs from Southern California in the top-25. The Gauchos open the season at College of the Desert on September 2. It is the final season that Saddleback will play in the current stadium (The Snakepit) as the school is scheduled to break ground on a new stadium following the 2017 season.
